A sentence of seven years and six months with a five-year non-parole period is within the available range for a particularly serious example of culpable driving causing death involving an intoxicated, unlicensed driver travelling at more than double the speed limit. General deterrence remains a powerful sentencing consideration for this offence. A plea of guilty, remorse, and rehabilitation efforts, while properly taken into account, do not necessarily require a sentence below the upper end of the range where the objective gravity of the offending is extreme.
