There is no tariff for the offence of grievous bodily harm in Western Australia; the most that can be said is that there is a range of sentences ordinarily imposed, and a sentence falling outside that range does not without more make it manifestly wrong. Sentencing authorities predating the 1998 increase in the maximum penalty from 7 to 10 years must be viewed with caution. A sentence of 7 years' imprisonment (70% of the maximum) was upheld for a brutal unprovoked attack on a stranger causing permanent cognitive impairment.
