When a sentencing judge applies the totality principle separately to individual groups of offences and then accumulates the resulting sentences, the totality principle must be considered again in relation to the overall accumulated sentence. However, this requirement may be satisfied where the sentencing judge expressly states that the sentence for one group takes into account the sentences for the other group, and the sentencing remarks as a whole demonstrate careful consideration of the total sentence. Deterrence remains an important sentencing principle for burglaries committed by young offenders.
