The standard non-parole period under Division 1A of the Crimes (Sentencing Procedure) Act 1999 does not apply to sentences imposed following a plea of guilty. Where special circumstances are found under s 44(2), effect is given by reducing the non-parole period, not by extending the balance of term. Where a co-offender's sentence has been reduced on appeal, parity principles require proportionate reductions for other co-offenders. A juvenile offender's greater objective culpability may be balanced by relative youth for parity purposes.
