Police-instigated pretext telephone calls between complainants and a suspect, recorded before the suspect is taken into custody, are admissible as a legitimate investigative technique and do not infringe the suspect's right to silence. A Longman warning is not required where offences were committed over a short period, investigated promptly, and tried within approximately 18 months, and the accused suffered no forensic disadvantage from delay. Acquittals on some counts do not render convictions on other counts inconsistent where there are particular evidentiary deficiencies explaining the acquittals.
