The repeal of s 16G of the Crimes Act 1914 (Cth) does not mechanically increase sentences by 50%; sentencing proceeds under s 16A(1) requiring a sentence of severity appropriate in all the circumstances. The parity principle does not require that subordinate offenders receive sentences lower than a principal whose sentence was heavily discounted for assistance and by operation of s 16G. For Commonwealth drug offences, non-parole periods should generally fall within the conventional range of 60-66% of the head sentence.
