A sentencing judge ordering periodic detention must first fix an appropriate period of imprisonment reflecting objective criminality and subjective circumstances (including any discount for an early plea of guilty), and only then consider whether the sentence should be served by way of periodic detention. The two considerations must not be telescoped, and it is impermissible to extend the term of imprisonment to compensate for the perceived leniency of periodic detention.
