Periodic detention is not an appropriate sentencing option for planned and calculated commercial fraud involving forged documents and amounts approaching $5 million, even where the offender has strong subjective circumstances including no prior record, severe depression, delay in prosecution, and rehabilitation. Delay and subjective features, whether considered alone or in combination, cannot justify periodic detention for offences of this objective seriousness.
