Possession of a loaded firearm for self-protection is not a matter of significant mitigation given the legislative policy to deter and punish firearms possession per se. The Court of Criminal Appeal will be slow to interfere with a sentencing judge's refusal to find special circumstances unless the non-parole period is manifestly excessive.
