For dangerous operation of a motor vehicle whilst adversely affected by an intoxicating substance committed by a young first offender with mitigating circumstances, a custodial period of 3 months before suspension of an 18-month sentence was appropriate. A 5-year licence disqualification was excessive in the circumstances and was reduced to 2 years. The commission of a further offence while on bail necessitates actual custody but does not preclude a relatively short custodial period before suspension where rehabilitation prospects are strong.
