Where an offender is convicted of a serious violent offence requiring service of 80 per cent of the sentence, the only available means of ameliorating the sentence to reflect a guilty plea is a reduction to the head sentence. A failure to effect such a reduction will render the sentence manifestly excessive. For maintaining a sexual relationship with a child with circumstances of aggravation over a prolonged period involving a parental relationship, the appropriate sentencing range is broadly 7 to 13 years, with exceptional cases justifying sentences in excess of 13 years.
