A voluntary confession of crimes that would otherwise not have been detected warrants a demonstrable sentencing discount, as it reduces the need for personal deterrence, increases prospects of rehabilitation, demonstrates genuine remorse, and serves the public interest in encouraging others to make like admissions. Where the total effective sentence fails to adequately reflect such voluntary disclosure, it may be manifestly excessive even where the individual sentences are appropriate.
