Sentences of five years' imprisonment for conspiracy to attempt to pervert the course of justice by a police officer and articled clerk were manifestly excessive where the approaches did not involve harassment, intimidation or standover tactics, and were reduced to two-and-a-half years and two years respectively. General deterrence and just punishment must be emphasised when members of the police force or legal profession conspire to pervert the course of justice. Late applications to amend grounds of appeal will be refused where they do not comply with the requirements of Rule 2.09 and there is no compelling reason in the interests of justice.
