Gambling addiction will rarely mitigate sentence, particularly for serious drug trafficking offences, and does not significantly reduce the importance of general deterrence. A sentencing judge dealing with multiple co-offenders is entitled to use a hierarchical analysis of roles as a tool for assessing relative culpability. The discount for a plea of guilty need not be proportionate to the anticipated length of trial.
