It is not permissible to impose an aggregate sentence on rolled up counts of theft, as such counts have by their nature already been aggregated. A gambling addiction may be taken into account as a mitigating factor in sentencing, but it would be an unusual case where it would significantly reduce the importance of general deterrence. Where a submission is made for a shorter non-parole period based on rehabilitation prospects, the sentencing judge should express a conclusion about those prospects.
