A discount for assistance to authorities given in connection with one offence should not be applied to reduce the sentence for a subsequent, unrelated offence committed while on bail for the first offence. To allow such a discount would provide a licence to offend while on bail with the expectation of a discounted penalty. Discounts for plea and assistance of more than 40 percent should be very exceptional where there is no evidence the offender will serve the sentence in more onerous conditions.
