A sentence of 18 years' imprisonment with a 14-year non-parole period for a domestic murder involving 27 stab wounds is within the permissible range, notwithstanding that the killing was unpremeditated, the offender was of good character with no prior violence, and was in a state of extreme emotional stress triggered by the victim's false confession of adultery. The infliction of violence, whether in a domestic setting or otherwise, cannot be justified simply because it is triggered by extreme anger. Each sentencing case must be dealt with by reference to its particular facts, so comparisons with sentences in other cases with different facts are of very limited value.
