For multiple counts of sexual offending against children (more than five counts, including at least one count of penile penetration), a total sentence of between 10 and 19 years' imprisonment, imposed after trial and after allowance for transitional provisions, is within the usual range. Where there are relatively fewer counts and more limited offending within this category, some reduction in the aggregate term may be expected. The effect of a complainant's mental illness on credibility is a matter for expert evidence or jury assessment based on ordinary human experience, and does not necessarily require an inference direction.
