The one-transaction rule requiring concurrent sentences for offences arising from a single episode of conduct is a general guideline of ordinary application, not a mandatory rule; cumulative sentences may be imposed where the gravity of harm to multiple victims warrants it. Section 6(2) of the Sentencing Act 1995 (WA) requires a sentencing judge to have regard to aggravating and mitigating factors but does not prescribe the weight to be given to either category. A lifetime driving disqualification may be imposed for motor vehicle manslaughter involving extreme speed and drug-affected driving.
