The totality principle requires that when a sentence is to be cumulative on sentences already being served, the sentencing court must ensure the aggregate does not result in an inappropriately long sentence having regard to the course of criminal conduct viewed as a whole. A sentencing judge may properly apply the principle by significantly reducing the sentence but still ordering it to be served cumulatively rather than concurrently.
