The discount for vicissitudes in assessing future economic loss is applied to the diminution of a plaintiff's capacity for work caused by the defendant's tort, not to any capacity the plaintiff may retain despite injuries. A plaintiff's post-injury smoking habits that may affect retained earning capacity do not justify increasing the vicissitudes discount applied to the lost capacity. Where a trial judge rejects substantial unchallenged expert evidence without explanation, the damages assessment will be set aside.
