Self-induced drug intoxication does not justify mitigation of sentence where the offender has a history of drug use and is aware of the potential impact of drugs, including psychotic episodes. Reasons for departing from the standard non-parole period must be clearly stated before sentence is pronounced; afterthought explanations may indicate the departure was not carefully considered. Wholly concurrent sentences are inappropriate where offences committed in a single episode are of different character.
