A Longman warning is not required where the delay in complaint is only a few years, the defence case was not especially hindered by the delay, and the complainant's evidence was supported by independent evidence. Cross-examination about hearsay rumours may be properly excluded where the rumours have no demonstrated connection to the complainant and would only distract the jury from the central credibility issue. A prosecutor is entitled to cross-examine a defence witness about a prior inconsistent statement even where the cross-examination is damaging to the witness's credibility, as the purpose of cross-examination is to test evidence.
