A prosecutor may address absence of motive to lie in closing address where the defence has alleged the complainant is lying, but must not elevate it to a central feature of the case or positively assert absence of motive. Where the prosecutor does so, specific directions are required but failure to seek redirection may be treated as a rational forensic decision precluding a finding of miscarriage of justice. A Longman direction need not specifically enumerate every consequence of delay where those consequences would be obvious to the jury.
