A deliberate tactical decision not to serve a writ within time, motivated by a desire to maintain a commercial relationship or to gain leverage in settlement negotiations with a third party, does not constitute good reason for extending the period of validity for service under r 5.12(2). A defendant who files a cross-application for stay or dismissal does not thereby waive its objection to non-service where the cross-application is consistent with maintaining that objection.
