Where identification evidence is the sole significant evidence against an accused, the trial judge must direct the jury with the authority of the judge's office on the specific risks of displacement of recollection and mutual contamination between witnesses who have discussed their identifications. Treating multiple observations by witnesses as strengthening identification, without warning of the risks those observations create, renders the verdict unsafe. Merely summarising defence counsel's submissions on identification weaknesses is insufficient.
