A fine of $100,000 for a first contempt of court, even where the contempt was brazen and contumacious, was held to be beyond the range where the financial effects had been substantially remedied by the time of sentencing. Fines of $30,000 were substituted. For a second contempt committed in deliberate aggravation of the first, a fine of $100,000 and 30 days' imprisonment were upheld. Offers of monetary compensation do not purge contempt where the court order required return of specific assets and the contemnor had the capacity to comply. It is not for contemnors to decide they would rather pay compensation than obey court orders.
