The phrase 'aggravation, acceleration, exacerbation or deterioration' of a disease in ss 4(b)(ii), 9A and 16(1)(b) of the Workers Compensation Act 1987 (NSW) encompasses the natural progression of the disease and its symptoms, not only worsening caused by external stimuli. When assessing whether employment was a substantial contributing factor to such aggravation, the Presidential member may take into account the role of constitutional degenerative factors and the natural progression of the disease. Murray v Shillingsworth does not support the contrary proposition.
