A sentencing judge is not necessarily in error by identifying a proportionate discount for mitigating factors beyond the utilitarian value of a guilty plea, but arithmetical deductions for factors such as remorse risk double counting where remorse underlies other mitigating factors such as good character, prospects of rehabilitation, and reparation. An assessment of manifest inadequacy must be made in light of the sentencing judge's unchallenged findings, and the CCA is slow to set aside a sentencing judge's characterisation of objective seriousness.
