The principles of parity in sentencing do not extend beyond persons charged as co-offenders; sentences on other persons convicted of similar offences are relevant only as comparable sentences generally. A discount towards the bottom of the 10-25% range (approximately 10%) is appropriate where a guilty plea is entered after the trial has commenced in a straightforward case. Sentencing judges must comply with s 21A of the Crimes (Sentencing Procedure) Act 1999 but need not engage in a ritual checklist analysis of every scheduled factor.
