A sentencing judge assessing objective seriousness for the purpose of the standard non-parole period provisions must indicate whether the offence is below, at, or above mid-range, with some indication of the degree of departure from mid-range; a finding of 'at least mid-range' is insufficient. A discount for a plea of guilty, if expressed in percentage terms, must be stated with certainty and not as a vague range. A Crown appeal cannot be brought solely to preserve parity between co-offenders without independently asserting manifest inadequacy.
