Where an offender is sentenced for multiple sexual offences committed as part of the same transaction, cumulation of 12 months on each of four concurrent rape sentences (on top of an already accumulated 8-year term) may be excessive; 6 months cumulation on each was substituted. The youth of a 19-year-old offender and prospects of rehabilitation must be given proper weight even in cases of serious sexual offending. A Zoneff direction is not required where the lie was incapable of constituting evidence of consciousness of guilt and the risk of the jury so reasoning was remote.
