In cases of grave serial sexual offending, considerations of youth and rehabilitation must take a 'back seat' to specific and general deterrence, denunciation and community protection. The fear engendered in the community by repeat offending is a proper aggravating factor. The Crown is not constrained on appeal by the position adopted at the plea where the prosecutor was not asked about, and did not make submissions on, the specific sentencing component under challenge.
