A trial judge must consider all evidence relevant to a disputed fact in issue together, rather than accepting one witness's evidence before evaluating conflicting evidence from other witnesses on the same topic. A contingent finding of negligence must be supported by adequate reasons explaining the risk, the reasonableness of the proposed response, and causation. An increase in risk is not by itself sufficient to establish that failure to take a precaution caused the damage.
