A Black direction need not follow the model direction verbatim; the essential content is sufficient, and at an early stage of deliberations it is not necessary to inform the jury of the power to discharge. A Longman direction need not identify every conceivable forensic disadvantage, particularly where the defence has not made enquiries to establish that the alleged disadvantage actually exists. A suggestion (as opposed to a direction) to approach counts sequentially does not constitute error where accompanied by proper directions about separate consideration of counts.
