The principles in R v Mills regarding youthful offenders do not constitute a special set of rules that either apply fully or are excluded; they are considerations to be balanced against other sentencing factors including general deterrence. For offences of prevalent street violence by intoxicated young men, general deterrence may have a particularly important role to play even for youthful offenders with good rehabilitation prospects.
