The totality principle does not preclude a total effective sentence of 10 years or more for an inveterate armed robber sentenced for multiple armed robbery offences, whether or not the offences were committed while on parole, where the seriousness of the offences viewed in their entirety and in all the circumstances requires such a sentence. The comparable sentencing range for such offenders in Western Australia is 7 to 10 years (or more), with the upper end and beyond being appropriate for offenders with extensive criminal histories and limited mitigation.
