Extra-curial punishment suffered by an offender, even of the most extreme kind (here, the murder of the offender's mother by the victim's father in an act of revenge), does not necessarily displace the requirement for actual custody where general deterrence requires it. The weight to be given to extra-curial punishment remains a matter for the sentencing judge's discretion, and a sentencing judge is entitled to conclude that general deterrence requires actual custody notwithstanding severe extra-curial consequences.
