A history of childhood physical and emotional abuse suffered by an offender does not, without supporting psychological evidence, reduce the weight to be given to a significant age gap between the offender and a child victim for sentencing purposes. A sentence of 2 years' imprisonment with a 12-month non-parole period for a single count of sexual penetration of a 14-year-old by a 24-year-old was within range despite the offender's troubled background, early plea, remorse, and the consensual nature of the intercourse.
