An extension of time to appeal will be granted where the delay is short and inconsequential, the respondent suffers no prejudice, the explanation for the delay is satisfactory, and the proposed grounds of appeal are tenable. A stay of execution pending appeal requires affidavit material that adequately establishes the applicant's financial position; merely asserting prospective bankruptcy in sketchy terms is insufficient. The unusual course of a trial judge deferring the effect of orders may create understandable confusion about when time begins to run for appeal purposes.
