In cases of multiple sexual offences against the same complainant, acquittals on some counts do not necessarily reflect a view that the complainant was untruthful; they may reflect a cautious approach by the jury, particularly where the complainant's evidence of blurring of episodes at night explains why the jury might doubt reliability on some counts but not others. However, where two counts arise from the same incident and there is no logical basis for accepting one and rejecting the other, the verdicts are relevantly inconsistent.
