Where portions of a covertly recorded conversation are properly excised from a transcript, the remaining portions must be reviewed to ensure they do not present a misleading picture of the accused's statements. If excised passages provide essential context for statements relied upon as consciousness of guilt evidence, the edited transcript should not go before the jury. Evidence that a child complainant's parent reminded the child of essential elements of her account that she had forgotten significantly diminishes the weight of that evidence, particularly where the reliability of the parent's own account of early complaint is doubtful.
