A sentence of six years' imprisonment with a three-year non-parole period is moderate for two counts of trafficking in a large commercial quantity of cannabis involving organised interstate drug trading. The parity principle does not strictly apply where a co-offender faces fewer counts. There is no obligation to reduce a sentence on account of home detention bail where there is no evidence the conditions were particularly onerous. Where offences are of a similar type and represent ongoing involvement in criminal enterprise, the use of s 18A to impose a single sentence without indicating how it is notionally divided between offences is unexceptional.
