A sentence of 10 years imprisonment (reduced from 12 for a guilty plea) with a 7-year non-parole period was upheld for the organiser of a large commercial cannabis trafficking operation involving approximately 99 pounds of cannabis and a separate cocaine trafficking offence. The use of s 18A of the Criminal Law (Sentencing) Act 1988 (SA) to impose a single sentence for offences of a similar type representing ongoing criminal enterprise does not require detailed explanation of how the sentence was arrived at. Differences in non-parole periods between co-offenders are justified where personal circumstances, timing of guilty pleas, and prospects of rehabilitation differ materially.
