Past leniency shown to an offender who repeatedly re-offends is relevant to prospects of rehabilitation and specific deterrence, but cannot be used as a barometer for the moral culpability of the instant offending. An offender's drug addiction carries little weight in sentencing for trafficking where the trafficking was not solely to support the addiction but primarily for profit. The narrow circumstance in which addiction may aggravate culpability is where the offender has overcome the addiction and then traffics purely for profit out of greed.
