A sentence of 18 months' imprisonment for recklessly causing serious injury by glassing is outside the range reasonably available even where the offender was responding to a perceived threat, had excellent prospects of rehabilitation, and strong mitigating factors. A wholly suspended sentence remains available in exceptional cases but the head sentence must adequately reflect the dangerousness of glassing, its prevalence, and the importance of general deterrence. In this case, two years and six months wholly suspended was within range.
