A driver who participates in drag-racing can be convicted of dangerous driving causing death as a principal even where only the other vehicle is involved in the collision, provided the racing is a legally sufficient cause of the death. An evasive manoeuvre by a co-offender in response to an emergency created by the racing does not break the chain of causation. When sentencing for dangerous driving causing death, a sentencing judge who fails to give reasons for a licence disqualification order may be found to have erred, particularly where the order does not account for the offender's rehabilitation prospects.
