A sentencing judge must provide a proper analysis of individual offences when sentencing for multiple counts, even where flexibility in grouping is permitted; illogical and inconsistent sentences across grouped offences constitute appealable error. The fact that an offender is a foreign national who may be deported is irrelevant to sentencing, including to the question of special circumstances. The absence of prior criminal history alone is unlikely to be sufficient to justify a finding of special circumstances.
