Where sentences are partially accumulated and the effective non-parole period exceeds 75 per cent of the total sentence, the sentencing judge must provide express reasons for the excess or risk the inference that the effect of partial accumulation was overlooked. A reduction of as little as three months may warrant appellate intervention where it represents the difference between a properly structured sentence and one infected by arithmetical error.
