A mature offender who is the employer of co-offenders and in a position of influence over them may properly receive a sentence reflecting that greater responsibility, even where the co-offenders are convicted of more serious charges. The parity principle does not require a lesser sentence merely because the applicant was convicted of a lesser offence where the applicant's role and culpability were particularly significant. It remains impermissible to reduce an otherwise appropriate sentence to avoid deportation consequences.
